“Salt stone” is what Sodalite means and it is, in the modern times, the birthstone for those born under the Sagittarius zodiac sign. Usually with brilliant navy blue color mottled with white streaks or patches, the stone is a tectosilicate mineral globally used as a gemstone. Although royal blue is the common feature of Sodalite stones, they may also display other hues such as blue green, green, grey, violet and yellow. Often confused for Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite stones differ from the former as its navy blue saturation is that of the traditional navy blue gradient and not ultramarine. The stone’s vitreous luster makes Sodalite a good fit for making loose gemstones, especially cabochons, for making various jewelry pieces.
Our Sodalite cabochons are highly polished and of the best quality. Most are perfectly polished with smooth domed faces, but we also have faceted variety--in our collection, the oval-shaped Sodalite cabochon. All pieces have resplendent navy blue color with unique white veining, except for one which has a dark grey to black saturation. Other shapes in this collection include round, rectangle and oval, and all have flat backs.
Because of the stone’s relative softness, with a hardness score playing between 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, it is perfect for making earrings, pendants and pins where there is lesser abrasion.
